There’s a lot of people out there that are a little perturbed that the new versions of Windows (Vista & 7) doesn’t support an option to view the size of each folder. There never really was this option for Windows right out of the box. Instead you usually had to download a program like FolderSize and once installed it would provide a column for you to be able to see the size of each folder.  This is very handy as it allows admins to be able to quickly view where all the space on their computers is being taken up.  Low and beholdFolderSize is not an option with the new Windows versions, as I mentioned before, since the shell is completely different for these newer OSs.

In comes JDiskReport, a free Java based tool, that will save the day and is pretty impressive for such a lightweight app.  It gives users the ability to scan an entire drive, or individual folders with all their subfolders attached.  It comes back with some pretty graphs which you can change from pie to bar and even ring and a detailed listing.  While hovering over the sections of the graphs you get more information that what’s initially displayed.  It lists the files in different categories including by size (duh), the top 50 biggest files, size distribution like how many files are x size, when modified, and by file types.

This tool is very robust and comes highly recommended by me as it’s been an extremely useful tool to find out what’s happening on my drives.  If you’re ever in need of knowing just how much space is being eaten up by files on your drives, use this tool, it’s definitely a winner!
